Injuries the story in 2026 season opener

WR AJ Brown suffers high ankle sprain and may be out for months;

Gerbils backup QB Sam Darnold suffers injured hip, which might affect JSN's numbers

The good news for Invaiders owner Vern Ahrendes? AJ Brown did not fracture his ankle last night against the Seahawks. The bad news? His high ankle sprain is likely to sideline him for a month or more.

There wasn't a lot of scoring in the 2026 NFL season opening last night in Seattle -- the defending Super Bowl champion Seachickens defeated their Super Bowl opponents, the Patriots, 13-10 -- but there were some key injuries that have a lasting effect in the new JSFL season.

AJ Brown's ankle injury in the second quarter could not have been pleasant to watch for Invaiders owner Vern Ahrendes, who was hoping for a banner year from his third-round pick (but instead got 2 points and a trip to the injured list).

Gerbils backup QB Sam Darnold suffered a hip injury on the team's first drive, and Seattle coach Mike McDonald said it was "great news" that the hip wasn't broken, words that are usually reserved for folks in assisted living situations. Chuck Nelson may be shopping for a new backup as Drew Lock did not offer much in the 3+ quarters he was in there, but he did manage 13 points... and that was a four-point improvement over Gerbils starter Drake Maye of the Patriots, who threw three fourth-quarter picks trying to get his second TD pass of the game against the league's stingiest defense.

Where we we stand after all that?

The Gerbils hold a 9-0 lead over the Spread Beaters, but Matt Pringle's team is expected to rally and win by 12.

Jaxson Smith-Njigba managed to score 18 even without Darnold in there, leading Who Dey to an 18-0 lead over WTNE. Matt McCumber's team is predicted to win that one by six (sorry, Jordan Garcia).

Vern's Invaiders were six-point favorites over Bob Garcia's Band Aids, but that was before Brown's 2-and-out opener. Now the Band Aids are favored to edge the Invaiders by a point.

The Tirades, six-point favorites over the Recliners after Chris Zimnoch lost TE Brock Bowers to a knee procedure on Wednesday, lead 13-9 after Wednesday's game and are now 15-point favorites. That's thanks to a 13-point effort from the Seattle defense (three sacks, three picks) -- the top-rated Seahawks D was the first defense off the board in Round 11. Recliners RB Rhamondre Stevenson was held to 9 points by that defense.

In the battle of the brothers, John Lambert and Jeff Lambert go head-to-head this week and are 0-0, but that will change this evening as John is starting QB Matt Stafford of the Rams against the 49ers defense in Melbourne, Australia. Stafford is 3-6 against the Niners since he's been in LA (worse if you count his games in Detroit) and his team arrived the day before the game, so... jet lag. We'll see what happens.
