Recliners, Rangers stage stunning Monday night comebacks

Updated: Oct 22, 2024

A pair of New York Jets standouts, who had been in the background most of the 2024 season, both bounce back big, leading Silent Division powerhouses to victory

We had a Garrett Wilson sighting (and a Breece Hall sighting as well) on Monday night as the Recliners and Rangers rallied for victories thanks to their Monday night efforts.

The top two teams in the league needed some surprising scoring on Monday night to remain at the top of the Silent Division standings.

The Recliners got 16 points from first-round pick WR Garrett Wilson and the Rangers got 16 from keeper RB Breece Hall to score comeback victories and remain 5-1. In case you are wondering, the two teams will square off in Week 9 in Arizona.

Over in the Shitty Teams Division, the Band Aids eked out a win under the decades-old tiebreaker rules, defeating the Gerbils thanks to the slimmest of margins: Bob Garcia's QB Lamar Jackson outscored the Gerbils' QB Daniel Wilson 18-17.

The Invaiders scored an easy 20-point win over the Packers and the Tirades defeated Who Dey by 21, thanks in large part to the Bills sidelining RB James Cook just prior to Monday night's kickoff, giving owner Matt McCumber very little time to deal with the late benching. Cook ended up remaining in Who Dey's lineup and taking a zero.

JSFL Trade Alert

The biggest news from last week came not long after the Week 6 preview was posted to the web site. The now 0-6 Packers officially folded the tents, sending keeper WR Ja'Marr Chase, WR Jayden Reed and QB Baker Mayfield to the Tirades for WRs Deebo Samuel and Darnell Mooney and QB Matt Stafford, along with a second-round draft pick.

Tirades owner Ron Hender decided to go all in for 2024, much as he did three years ago when he dealt for Cooper Kupp and Travis Kelce -- and that trade famously blew up when Kupp was knocked out for the season in the first five minutes of his next game. He's hoping that won't be the case again this time.

The trade already paid dividends as Baker Mayfield got the start at QB and scored 25 points, which the Tirades hope lights a fire under second-round draft pick Josh Allen, who scored 17 on Monday night, breaking a streak of two single-digit scoring efforts.

NFL Trade Alerts

John Lambert must be thrilled now that the Rangers WR3 Amari Cooper and WR4 Davante Adams have been traded. The first shoe to drop was we learned that Adams had been traded by the Raiders to the Jets, where he'll be reunited with QB Aaron Rodgers. Adams, who has not started a game for the 5-1 Rangers, has been sidelined the last two weeks with an "injury" and has also been actively seeking a trade. He posted a season high 17 points in Week 2 and has 27 points for the season. Cooper, also a former Raiders WR, was stuck in that quagmire of an offense that Cleveland is stuck with now that they spent a king's ransom on alleged QB Deshaun Watson, who I believe in the 2024 season has recorded the worst statistics of any QB in the history of the NFL. Cooper was shipped to Buffalo today, where he will benefit from Josh Allen's arm and the fact that the team doesn't have a real WR1 threat.

Week 6 Recap

RECLINERS 119, BEATERS 116: I thought this one was in the bag. Two-time defending champion Matt Pringle probably thought it was in the bag. His team had 116 points, scoring 23 over projections, and led by 13 going into the Monday night game. RB Derrick Henry had scored 25. WR Chris Godwin had erupted for 24. RBs Tony Pollard and JK Dobbins added 15 each. But we'd all but forgotten about Garrett Wilson. Sure, he'd scored 16 the week before against the Vikings, and maybe that was a clue. But we were just as likely to expect the same results as his first four games of the season: which went 6-5-9-3. He came through with another 16, though, much to the delight of Chris Zimnoch, who saw his record improve to 5-1, remaining in a tie for the division lead with the Rangers. RBs also led the way for the Recliners in this one. Joe Mixon cameback from injury to score 25, and keeper Bijan Robinson added 22, the first time he's scored more than 11 this season. WR DeVonta Smith scored 12 and QB CJ Stroud added 17. There was also a Sam LaPorta sighting for the Recliners as the Lions TE scored a TD on a flea-flicker in Detroit's rout over the Cowboys. Pringle's Spread Beaters dropped to 3-3.

Breece Hall rambles through the Bills defense for a big gain en route to 16 points.

RANGERS 85, WTNE 82: In an even more unlikely comeback, Jordan Garcia's WTNE saw a big lead evaporate on Monday night as his kicker missed an extra point and a field goal in very windy conditions in New Jersey, and those four points were the difference as the Rangers, behind 16 points from RB Hall, stormed back to take the win and maintain a share of the Silent Division lead at 5-1. Hall, who'd scored a total of four points in the previous two games, had 113 yards rushing and 56 receiving and would have had a TD late in the game had he not run out of gas inside the 10 yard line and decided inexplicably to run out of bounds instead of running over the lone Buffalo defender between him and the goal line. John Lambert also got 17 from TE George Kittle and 13 from both QB Kirk Cousins and K Justin Tucker. QB Jayden Daniels led WTNE with 20 and the Lions defense, feasting on Cowboys, added 18 as Jordan's team dropped to 3-3.

BAND AIDS 89 (18), GERBILS 89 (17): Pat Mahomes was on a bye week. The fact that the Chuck Nelson's starting QB was idle is the main reason that the Band Aids were able to pull out the rare "QB Tiebreaker" victory in this one, as Bob's QB Lamar Jackson scored 18 and Gerbils backup QB Daniel Brown only managed 17. The Band Aids (4-2) remain in sole possession of the Shitty Teams Division lead as a result, one game up on the Tirades. The Band Aids rode three RBs to the win: James Conner (12), Chuba Hubbard (11) and Flex Bucky Irving (16). AJ Brown returned to action for the Gerbils and led the team with 17 points. Drake London added 13.

INVAIDERS 86, PACKERS 66: The formerly mighty Packers have fallen on times harder than they've ever experienced before. Vern Ahrendes' Invaiders handed Jeff Lambert his sixth consecutive loss to start the season, the first time that's ever happened. Last-second free agent pickup RB Tyrone Tracy Jr. scored 16, Najee Harris rose from the dead to score 17 and QB Brock (Go Niners!) Purdy had a team-high 23 as the Invaiders cruised to the win. The Packers got 17 from recent trade acquisition WR Deebo Samuel.

TIRADES 92, WHO DEY 71: As mentioned earlier, having a RB sidelined in the minutes before the Monday night game sucks. Tirades owner Ron Hender can relate, as that is exactly what happened in Week 1 as RB Christian McCaffrey, who was nothing more than "questionable" all week, suddenly was out and then on the IR. Matt McCumber's Who Dey (2-4) had the same experience with Buffalo's Cook on Monday, with no time or realistic way to make a substitution without dropping Cook. The result was a zero from a RB position, and that's much like starting WR Calvin Ridley each week... what do you expect? Anyway, recent trade acquisition Baker Mayfield led the Tirades with 25 points as previous starter Josh Allen watched from the bench. RB David Montgomery added 20 more as the Tirades (3-3) were able to comfortably watch the Monday night game without fearing impending doom.
